In a remarkable step that strengthens Abu Dhabi’s growing reputation as a global healthcare destination, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi has announced a major partnership with the world-renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute to open its first-ever international facility in the UAE capital.
Recognised 24 times as the No. 1 eye hospital in the United States by US News & World Report, Bascom Palmer’s expansion marks a significant milestone for both the region and the global medical community. The new centre is scheduled to open in November 2025 in Mohamed Bin Zayed City, through a collaboration with August Medical under the SOZA Group.
The upcoming 70,000-square-foot eye care facility will stand out with its gemstone-inspired architecture, symbolising clarity and precision in vision care. It will house 31 examination rooms, three advanced operating theatres, and specialised laser and refractive suites. Patients will also benefit from a dedicated Ocular Surface Disease Laboratory, along with supporting services such as ENT and Sleep Centres — offering comprehensive and coordinated eye and health solutions under one roof.
The centre aims to bring Bascom Palmer’s legacy of excellence in ophthalmology, pioneering research, and medical education to the UAE. Once operational, the facility will provide treatments for retinal and corneal diseases, glaucoma, ocular oncology, paediatric ophthalmology, and complex orbital conditions, ensuring patients in the region have access to advanced care without the need to travel abroad.
This partnership reinforces Abu Dhabi’s mission to build a connected, world-class healthcare ecosystem that combines innovation, global expertise, and patient-centred care. With its modern infrastructure and progressive health regulations, the emirate continues to attract top medical institutions, setting new benchmarks for quality and specialised healthcare in the Middle East.
