In a significant recognition of athletic excellence, the Thai government has awarded more than 33 million baht to athletes, coaches, and sports organizations following their remarkable showing at the 6th Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China. The ceremony, presided over by Minister of Tourism and Sports Mr. Surasak Panjaroenvorakul on May 6, 2026, took place at The Grand Fourwings Convention Hotel in Bangkok and was designed to celebrate the notable achievements of Thai athletes and foster the growth of the national sports scene on a global level.
Held from April 22 to April 30, 2026, the 6th Asian Beach Games saw Thailand clinch a commendable second position overall. Thai competitors brought home 28 medals, comprising 10 gold, 9 silver, and 9 bronze, showcasing the country's rising prowess in sports.
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports, along with the Sports Authority of Thailand and the National Sports Development Fund, allocated a total prize fund of 33,982,500 baht to honor the achievements of its athletes and their support teams. This financial aid recognizes the relentless efforts and accomplishments of these sports figures.
Athletes received 23.7 million baht in direct rewards for their medal successes, while coaches garnered more than 3.17 million baht for their invaluable guidance. Additionally, sports associations received over 7.11 million baht to bolster future training initiatives and development endeavors. This funding aims not just as recognition but also as an investment toward making Thai sports sustainably successful.
During the award ceremony, Minister Surasak expressed gratitude to various stakeholders, including government bodies, private industry leaders, coaches, trainers, and sports associations. He pointed out that Thailand's achievements in sports stem from robust collaboration and ongoing development across sectors. He assured that the government is dedicated to establishing a modernized and sustainable sporting infrastructure.
The Minister underscored the government's "Thailand Sport Plus" approach concentrating on four core sports development areas. First is Sport Health, aimed at promoting sports participation and wellness nationwide. The second, Sport Wealth, is focused on leveraging sports to foster economic growth, tourism, and associated sectors. Sport Pride seeks to elevate the standards of Thai sporting events, while Sport Future emphasizes integrating technology into athlete training and sports management.
Alongside supporting athletes, the administration has highlighted the necessity of transparent financial practices in the sports domain. Minister Surasak noted that the National Sports Development Fund employs a zero-based budgeting methodology to guarantee that expenditures are measurable, effective, and beneficial for athletes and sports organizations. Enhanced performance metrics will also be implemented to bolster long-term planning and efficiency.
Officials assert that Thailand's accomplishments at the Asian Beach Games signal its growing capability to compete with leading sports nations in Asia. This impressive medal haul has instilled national pride and motivated younger athletes countrywide. Continuing investment in athlete training programs, competitive opportunities, and facility enhancements is expected to preserve Thailand's robust performance in future contests.
Minister Surasak concluded by affirming that Thai athletes' successes have brought immense pride to the nation. He clarified that the allocation of over 33 million baht is not merely a reward for medals but a critical step in fostering a sustainable sports future. Ongoing investments in athletes, technology, and infrastructure will help Thailand reach even higher achievements on the international stage in years to come.
