Colombian cyclist Cristian Camilo Munoz has died following medical complications after a crash during the Tour du Jura in France. He was 30.
Munoz suffered a knee injury after crashing during the race last Saturday. He initially received treatment at a medical centre before travelling with his team to Spain. However, his condition worsened after developing a severe infection that was described as difficult to treat.
He was later admitted to a hospital, where his health continued to deteriorate. Despite efforts by medical staff, Munoz passed away on Friday morning, according to a statement released by his team, NU Colombia Continental Team.
Following his death, the team announced it would withdraw from the Vuelta a Asturias.
David Lappartient, president of the International Cycling Union, expressed his condolences, saying the cycling community is mourning the loss and extended sympathy to Munoz’s family, friends, and teammates.
Munoz previously rode for UAE Team Emirates between 2019 and 2021. He joined NU Colombia in 2024.
During his career, he achieved notable results, including stage wins at the Clasica de Anapoima and the Vuelta a Boyaca, and secured the mountains classification title at the Clasico RCN.
