In a significant political development, Kerala's Chief Minister-designate V.D. Satheesan has initiated talks for the new state government after being selected for the role by Congress leadership. As activity surged in Thiruvananthapuram on May 15, 2026, United Democratic Front (UDF) leaders convened to outline Cabinet structures and alliance roles.
In his consultations, V.D. Satheesan met with former Chief Minister and current Opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan at his residence. This meeting gathered considerable political attention as Kerala gears up for a new governance era following this month’s Assembly election results.
The Congress party faced nearly ten days of uncertainty post-elections before the All India Congress Committee officially endorsed Satheesan for the Chief Minister role on May 14, marking the conclusion of intense discussions among party leaders vying for the position.
Prominent Congress figure Ramesh Chennithala, viewed as a leading contender for the post, publicly endorsed Satheesan, a move perceived by party members as a vital step toward bolstering unity within Congress and reinforcing the UDF alliance ahead of government formation.
UDF leaders are conducting critical talks concerning Cabinet roles and fair representation for alliance partners. Kerala Congress (Jacob) leader Anoop Jacob indicated that partners expect equitable representation and that discussions concerning ministerial roles will persist in upcoming leadership meetings.
Numerous Congress leaders showed confidence in Satheesan’s capabilities, with senior leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan asserting that he possesses the vision and competence necessary to lead Kerala effectively.
In media statements, Satheesan highlighted the necessity of preserving Kerala’s secular identity. He noted that the Assembly election results signified the populace’s support for secular principles, cautioning against divisive rhetoric.
The Chief Minister-designate emphasized that addressing the rising cost of living and economic pressures linked to fuel price fluctuations due to West Asia tensions would be priorities for his administration. He committed to alleviating financial burdens on citizens and enhancing public welfare across the state.
The UDF is poised to finalize Cabinet arrangements shortly, as the coalition prepares to officially take office and embark on a new political journey in Kerala.
