In a significant move, Singapore has allocated US$12 million to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) to bolster its commitment to global pandemic readiness and vaccine development. This funding is set to be distributed over a span of four years, from 2027 to 2030.
The announcement was made by Ong Ye Kung, the Health Minister of Singapore, during a CEPI side event at the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland. This contribution underscores Singapore’s dedication to international collaboration in public health and disease prevention.
The Ministry of Health in Singapore highlighted that vaccines are pivotal in managing infectious disease outbreaks and future pandemic scenarios. The ministry emphasized that robust international partnerships are essential for the rapid development and distribution of vaccines during global health crises.
Since joining CEPI in 2020, Singapore has contributed to the organization’s global vaccine initiatives and has enhanced its own capabilities in vaccine research and manufacturing, supported by strengthened scientific advisory systems and regulatory frameworks.
Minister Ong Ye Kung remarked on Singapore's substantial investments in vaccine research and healthcare innovation in recent years. He noted that collaboration with CEPI has not only refined the country’s scientific expertise but also significantly contributed to international public health efforts.
This new funding is anticipated to accelerate CEPI’s mission to speed up vaccine research and ensure fair access to vaccines in future health emergencies. CEPI collaborates with governments, research institutions, and pharmaceutical companies worldwide to enhance global epidemic response mechanisms.
Global health experts have emphasized the necessity for improved preparedness based on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, with nations now prioritizing vaccine security, medical supply chains, and enhanced international health coordination to mitigate risks from future outbreaks.
Officials from Singapore reaffirm that the country is committed to actively enhancing global healthcare resilience and supporting international systems for swift responses to emerging infectious diseases.
