Dubai Customs has officially launched the Center of Excellence for Customs and Trade Logistics in partnership with the University of Dubai as part of the emirate’s broader strategy to strengthen its position as a leading global trade and logistics hub. The initiative aims to modernize customs systems, improve supply chain resilience and support the goals of Dubai Economic Agenda D33.
The newly established center will function as an advanced research and knowledge hub focused on developing innovative customs solutions, improving operational efficiency and enhancing the global competitiveness of Dubai’s trade ecosystem. Authorities said the project reflects Dubai’s long-term ambition to become one of the world’s most influential economic and commercial centers.
According to Dubai Customs, the center will focus on policy development, applied research, digital customs systems and international benchmarking studies designed to improve trade facilitation and logistics performance. The initiative will also support the development of smarter customs operations powered by artificial intelligence, digital technologies and modern trade solutions.
The partnership with the University of Dubai will allow the center to collaborate with leading international academic institutions and research organizations. Participating global partners include Kühne Logistics University, Michigan State University, University of Adelaide and Henley Business School among others.
Officials said the center will help address emerging global trade challenges including cross-border e-commerce, supply chain security, sustainability and digital transformation in logistics operations. The project is also expected to contribute to stronger trade transparency and improved customer experiences across customs services.
Dubai Customs Director General Dr Abdulla Busenad described the center as a strategic investment in Dubai’s future readiness and a key part of the emirate’s economic growth strategy. He said the initiative will strengthen research capabilities, support evidence-based policymaking and help Dubai remain competitive in rapidly changing global trade environments.
University of Dubai President Dr Eesa Al Bastaki said the partnership creates a bridge between academic knowledge and real-world customs operations. He added that the collaboration aims to produce innovative solutions capable of shaping the future of global trade governance and integrated logistics systems.
As part of the launch, Dubai Customs and the University of Dubai are also organizing a large innovation hackathon involving 33 student teams and more than 110 participants. The event focuses on developing smart solutions for customs inspections, supply chain resilience, trade transparency and future logistics technologies.
The initiative highlights Dubai’s growing emphasis on digital transformation, innovation and knowledge-driven economic development as it seeks to position itself at the center of future global trade systems.
