Dubai: One of the world’s most recognisable luxury landmarks, Burj Al Arab, is set to undergo its first major restoration since opening in 1999. The announcement was made by Jumeirah Group on April 15, marking a significant milestone in the hotel’s 27-year history.
The sail-shaped hotel, which has become a global symbol of Dubai’s luxury tourism and architectural ambition, will be restored through a carefully planned phased programme. The entire process is expected to take around 18 months.
Phased Restoration With Heritage Focus
According to Jumeirah Group, the restoration will prioritise preserving the hotel’s distinctive identity while modernising key interior spaces. The approach has been described as similar to restoring a valuable piece of art—focusing on precision, craftsmanship, and respect for the original design rather than a complete overhaul.
Thomas B. Meier, CEO of Jumeirah Group, said the project represents a new chapter for the landmark property, ensuring it continues to reflect prestige and design excellence for future generations.
Interior Upgrade Without Losing Essence
The renovation will focus on refreshing interiors while maintaining the signature luxury elements that define the hotel. Since its opening, Burj Al Arab has been known for its opulent design, including marble finishes, gold leaf detailing, and Swarovski crystal features.
The all-suite hotel houses 198 duplex suites and stands 321 metres tall on an artificial island off Dubai’s coastline, making it one of the most photographed buildings in the world.
Tristan Auer to Lead Restoration
The project will be led by renowned Paris-based interior architect Tristan Auer, known for his work on heritage properties such as the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris. His selection followed a rigorous evaluation process.
Auer stated that leading the first restoration of such an iconic structure is both an honour and a responsibility, highlighting his commitment to preserving its legacy while introducing contemporary refinements.
Continued Presence in Dubai Skyline
Despite the ongoing work, Burj Al Arab will remain a central feature of Dubai’s skyline throughout the restoration period. The phased approach is expected to minimise disruption while maintaining the hotel’s global appeal.
Background: Recent Incident
Earlier this year, on March 1, 2026, Dubai authorities reported a minor fire on the hotel’s exterior caused by debris from an intercepted drone following regional tensions. Emergency teams responded swiftly, and no injuries were reported.
