In a significant move to enhance media education and professional growth, the European Union Delegation to Turkmenistan conducted a succession of workshops in Ashgabat. Focused on digital journalism and artificial intelligence, these training sessions took place from April 29 to May 6, 2026, at Bouygues Turkmen's training facility, attracting journalists, educators, students, and media practitioners nationwide.
The initiative, backed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the European Union, and the CARAVAN media project, aims to advance media literacy and digital communication capabilities amidst a world increasingly influenced by technology and artificial intelligence. Officials hailed the workshops as crucial in helping media professionals navigate today’s fast-evolving information landscape.
Kicking off the series, Maciej Madalinski, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation, underscored the significance of media development and literacy within the framework of the EU’s collaboration with Turkmenistan and Central Asian nations. He emphasized the pivotal role media literacy plays in the broader strategy for regional cooperation.
Madalinski noted that advancements in digital technology and AI are reshaping how information is produced and consumed globally. He pointed out the impact of social media algorithms on audience engagement, making the lines between traditional journalism and user-generated content blur, which creates both opportunities and responsibilities for content creators.
With an aim to equip participants with the necessary skills to tackle these challenges, the workshops focused on practical content creation strategies, ethical media use of AI, digital storytelling, and the integration of technology into journalism practices. Attendees also received training on advanced digital tools to enhance editorial efficacy.
Expert trainers from Kazakhstan, including Gulim Amirkhanova and Aiganym Amirbekova, led the sessions. They shared insights through engaging discussions, case studies, and interactive experiences, fostering innovation while advocating for responsible journalism in the digital era.
This workshop series marks the second phase of the CARAVAN media project's efforts in Ashgabat, following a previous program focused on media literacy and the integration of AI in autumn 2025.
Participants, comprised of university students, media professionals, and educators, expressed high regard for the initiative, highlighting its value in enriching professional skills. Many recognized that proficiency in digital media and AI is increasingly essential for success in contemporary communication.
Continuing its commitment to educational and digital transformation across Central Asia, the European Union believes that fostering media literacy and encouraging responsible journalism will pave the way for a more informed society adept at navigating the fast-paced digital landscape.
