On May 12 and 13, 2026, media personnel from various regions of Turkmenistan gathered in Ashgabat for a dedicated media literacy training event. Hosted at the OSCE Centre, the workshop emphasized the enhancement of skills related to critical analysis, digital safety, fact-checking, and ethical journalism amidst today’s evolving media landscape.
Representatives from print, television, and digital media attended the training, which aimed to address the pressing challenges posed by artificial intelligence, misinformation, and the spread of harmful content across digital platforms globally.
With rapid technological advancements shaping modern journalism, the organizers highlighted the growing need for media literacy. Participants learned strategies to discern misinformation, scrutinize digital content effectively, and produce accurate, trustworthy news for their audiences.
William Leaf, Head of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat, opened the sessions by stressing the crucial role played by journalists in society. He noted the heightened responsibility journalists carry as the public relies on them for accurate information amidst a backdrop of manipulation and misinformation.
The training included sessions led by local experts in collaboration with international media authority Adil Jalilov from the MediaNet International Center for Journalism in Kazakhstan. Topics covered encompassed practical fact-checking techniques, media ethics, digital security measures, and the innovative use of neural networks and AI in journalism.
Particular emphasis was placed on adhering to UNESCO's ethical guidelines and ensuring responsible journalistic practices. Participants acquired modern skills for verifying online information and learned how to safeguard against cyber threats and disinformation campaigns that threaten media credibility.
As per the organizers, the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat consistently supports Turkmenistan's National Human Rights Action Plan, promoting media freedom and literacy. They have already trained 20 national trainers who actively educate journalists, students, bloggers, and public officials throughout the nation.
Officials have indicated that such educational initiatives are critically important for the future of journalism in Turkmenistan. The training aims to equip young journalists and media workers with the essential skills necessary to safeguard the information sphere and effectively address global digital challenges.
