In a significant political maneuver, the Indian National Congress has pledged its support to Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as discussions about the new government formation in Tamil Nadu intensify after the assembly elections. However, the Congress laid out a crucial stipulation for the alliance.
Party officials emphasized that any partnership must exclude what they term as “communal forces” that reject the Indian Constitution. This declaration came from Girish Chodankar, the All India Congress Committee in-charge for Tamil Nadu, following talks between the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislative Party.
With Congress's backing, Vijay's seat count in the Tamil Nadu Assembly now increases by five, bringing the total to 112 seats as TVK clinched 107 seats in the recent elections, making it the leading party in the 234-member assembly. However, Vijay needs to secure six more seats to reach the majority threshold of 118 to form the government.
Political insiders indicate that Vijay is also engaging with other regional and left-leaning parties, such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, the Communist Party of India, and the Communist Party of India Marxist. Should these parties align with TVK, the coalition could claim the majority, paving the way for Vijay’s official appointment as Chief Minister.
This unfolding political scenario has stirred considerable excitement across Chennai and surrounding areas. Vijay's entrance into politics and his robust electoral success have notably shifted the political dynamics in Tamil Nadu, diminishing the longstanding supremacy of the two main Dravidian parties.
Furthermore, the Congress asserted that their alliance with TVK is founded on principles of mutual respect, secularism, and a shared vision for governance. Party leaders expressed that their cooperation would extend beyond mere government formation and continue through local and national elections.
Simultaneously, it has been reported that certain TVK leaders have met with Edappadi K. Palaniswami, leader of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, in Chennai, fueling speculation about potential political shifts and possible rifts within current alliances in the state.
The Congress press release identified both Vijay and Rahul Gandhi as committed to honoring the electoral mandate from the people of Tamil Nadu, stressing their joint resolve towards establishing an inclusive and development-focused government aimed at youth and public welfare.
In the recent elections, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam surprised political analysts by securing 108 seats, making it the assembly's largest party, while the ruling party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, garnered only 59 seats and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam managed 47. Vijay emerged victorious in both of his contested seats and is anticipated to keep the Perambur seat while vacating Trichy East, possibly leading to a by-election soon.
