Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with Dubai Airports, has announced a major project to widen and upgrade the bridge leading to Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport. This project aims to improve traffic flow, reduce travel time for passengers, and enhance the overall experience for travelers, while also preparing the airport to handle the continuous increase in passenger numbers. Dubai International Airport recorded over 92 million passengers in 2024, and the expansion is designed to meet the demands of this growing traffic.
Innovative Bridge Design to Ensure Smooth Traffic
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, explained that the existing bridge will be widened from three lanes to four lanes. To achieve this, a new bridge will be built using an innovative system of steel box girders combined with a composite concrete slab. This design is highly efficient and allows construction to be completed quickly.

Al Tayer emphasized that the construction will not require traffic diversions on Airport Street or temporary supports under the bridge. This approach ensures uninterrupted traffic flow and maintains the highest safety standards for drivers and passengers alike.
Detailed Project Features
The total length of the bridge, including its ramps, will be 171 meters, with the main span reaching nearly 70 meters. The project includes several improvements to the surrounding infrastructure, such as:
-
Upgrading road pavement for smoother journeys.
-
Enhancing infrastructure services.
-
Landscaping to integrate the bridge with its surroundings.
-
Installing new street lighting to improve visibility and safety.
Once completed, the bridge’s capacity will increase from 4,200 vehicles per hour to 5,600 vehicles per hour, which is a 33% rise. This expansion will make travel faster and safer for everyone.
Commitment to Developing Dubai’s Transport Infrastructure
Al Tayer reaffirmed RTA’s dedication to developing Dubai’s roads and transport systems. The authority focuses on improving key transport corridors and offering sustainable, flexible mobility solutions for residents and visitors. The improvements not only ease travel but also enhance the quality of life and strengthen Dubai’s global position as a leading hub for international events.
He stated that the bridge expansion is part of RTA’s continuous effort to improve traffic flow and connectivity. The project strengthens links between major roads and important facilities, especially Dubai International Airport, which is the world’s busiest airport for international travelers. By expanding the bridge, RTA aims to increase road capacity, boost safety, and reduce travel time during peak hours.
Airport Street Improvements
The bridge project complements previous upgrades along Airport Street. RTA has already undertaken a large-scale project to improve Airport Street, covering the stretch from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Casablanca Street. The work included constructing bridges and tunnels at several key intersections, including Al Rashidiya, Casablanca Street, Marrakech Street, and Nad Al Hamar Street.
Some major upgrades already completed include:
-
A single-lane bridge providing direct access to Terminal 3, allowing vehicles to bypass traffic signals.
-
A bridge leading to the Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP) complex.
-
Another single-lane bridge enabling vehicles from Airport Street to access Casablanca Street without waiting at traffic lights.
These improvements created alternative routes for vehicles traveling from Al Garhoud to Terminals 1 and 3, reducing congestion and travel times. Additionally, Casablanca Street was expanded from three lanes to four lanes in the direction of Al Garhoud Bridge, further enhancing traffic flow.
Benefits for Travelers and the City
Once the bridge expansion is completed, travelers to Dubai International Airport will experience smoother, faster journeys to Terminal 1. The project will also contribute to the overall efficiency of Dubai’s road network, supporting the city’s goal to be a model of smart and sustainable transport.
The combination of wider lanes, improved road surfaces, enhanced lighting, and better landscaping ensures a safer and more comfortable travel experience. Drivers will benefit from reduced congestion, and passengers will have easier access to terminals, making their journey to catch flights faster and less stressful.
Looking Ahead
RTA’s project for Terminal 1 bridge highlights Dubai’s ongoing commitment to transport infrastructure development. By investing in modern, efficient, and innovative engineering solutions, the city aims to meet growing demand and maintain its reputation as a world-class destination for both business and tourism.
The expansion of the bridge is not only a technical achievement but also an essential step toward supporting Dubai’s continuous growth in air travel. With over 92 million passengers using Dubai International Airport in 2024, such improvements are vital to accommodate future traffic increases and ensure the smooth movement of people and goods.
The widening and upgrading of the Terminal 1 bridge at Dubai International Airport is a significant step in Dubai’s infrastructure development. It demonstrates the RTA’s focus on innovation, efficiency, and safety while addressing the needs of one of the world’s busiest airports. With improved traffic flow, shorter journey times, and enhanced facilities, the project promises a better travel experience for residents, tourists, and business travelers alike, further cementing Dubai’s status as a global transport hub.
