The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has taken a major step forward in bringing electric air taxis to the United Arab Emirates by advancing plans to introduce the Archer Midnight eVTOL aircraft into service.
Archer Aviation has become the first eVTOL manufacturer to enter the GCAA’s Restricted Type Certificate programme. This approval allows limited commercial operations while ensuring the aircraft is developed under strict safety and regulatory standards for long-term use in the UAE.
The move follows several years of close cooperation between the regulator and Archer Aviation. This includes multiple technical inspections at the company’s facilities in the United States, along with in-country test flights of the Midnight aircraft in the UAE.
As part of the certification process, the GCAA has also started key approvals such as Design Organization Approval and Production Organization Approval. These approvals show strong confidence in Archer Aviation’s engineering, safety systems, and production quality.
According to Aqeel Al Zarooni, Assistant Director-General for Aviation Safety Affairs at GCAA, the authority remains committed to safely integrating advanced aviation technologies into UAE airspace.
The programme has progressed across eight major workstreams, including aircraft certification, operations, maintenance, flight crew training, airspace planning, vertiport development, security, and regulatory oversight.
The Midnight eVTOL is expected to begin initial operations in Abu Dhabi in partnership with local operator Abu Dhabi Aviation. The aircraft is designed to support short-distance urban air mobility and reduce travel time across the city.
This development marks a significant step toward the UAE’s goal of becoming a global hub for advanced air mobility and next-generation aviation technology.
