Etihad Airways has announced a major expansion of its African network, introducing new routes from Abu Dhabi to key destinations across the continent, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Ghana, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe.
This strategic move is part of the airline’s broader global growth plan, aimed at strengthening connectivity in high-potential markets. The new services are expected to enhance trade links, improve cargo capacity, and support increasing passenger demand between Africa and other global regions.
The expansion comes on the heels of Etihad’s recent growth initiatives in China, including increased flight frequencies and an expanded partnership with China Eastern Airlines. Together, these developments position Abu Dhabi as a vital transit hub connecting Africa, India, the Middle East, and Asia. This improved connectivity is set to facilitate smoother movement of goods, investments, and travelers across some of the world’s fastest-growing economies.
The initiative also reflects the deepening economic relationship between the UAE and African nations. Trade and investment ties have been strengthening across sectors such as energy, infrastructure, mining, and logistics, with Abu Dhabi playing a key role in enabling these economic exchanges.
Additionally, the expansion complements Etihad’s strategic joint venture with Ethiopian Airlines, further reinforcing connectivity within Africa and supporting regional aviation growth.
Etihad Airways CEO Antonoaldo Neves highlighted Africa as a natural next step in the airline’s expansion strategy. He noted that rising demand for connectivity—especially in cargo and trade sectors—is currently exceeding supply in several African markets.
He added that the new routes will create more efficient travel corridors between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Passengers will benefit from faster, more seamless journeys, while cargo operations will gain improved access to rapidly growing trade routes.
Overall, the new services are expected to provide direct connections between African cities and Abu Dhabi, while also offering convenient one-stop links to destinations across Asia, India, and the Middle East, further strengthening Etihad’s global network.
