In a significant move towards enhancing its cooperative sector, Thailand is embarking on a strategic initiative aimed for 2026. Spearheaded by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Piyarat Tiyapairat, the discussions revolved around boosting the efficiency and long-term viability of cooperatives nationwide.
During the session of the National Cooperative Development Committee, a robust and transparent cooperative framework emerged as a focal point. Various officials contributed to the dialogue, providing insights and recommendations to steer future developments.
A key emphasis during the meeting was placed on integrating digital solutions. The government is set to enhance apps and websites for better accessibility, striving to create a member-centric platform that facilitates swift and efficient service access.
The initiative will also aim at improved data sharing across government sectors. By linking systems and promoting innovation, authorities seek to enhance decision-making processes and service quality. Collaborations with educational and research institutions will drive the development of innovative technologies tailored for farmers and cooperative members.
Debt management is another priority, with the government committed to assisting countless cooperative members in alleviating their financial burdens. This approach is expected to elevate economic stability and improve living standards for many households.
The strategy for 2026 is derived from the 5th Cooperative Development Plan spanning 2023 to 2027, with multiple projects already underway demonstrating substantial progress toward the outlined objectives.
Looking ahead, the government will concentrate on bolstering underperforming cooperatives by enhancing management practices and promoting transparency. Auditing and governance will leverage technology to ensure accountability.
The initiative also emphasizes ethical standards among cooperative personnel while aiding thousands of cooperatives and farmer groups. Efforts will focus on establishing exemplary high-performance model cooperatives to guide others.
With over nine thousand cooperatives comprising millions of members, particularly in agriculture, these entities are pivotal to Thailand's economy, significantly contributing to national income through lending, deposit services, and agricultural assistance.
The meeting acknowledged various national cooperative federations instrumental in the sector's advancement. Officials are optimistic that a strong partnership between government entities coupled with digital innovation will invigorate the cooperative framework, fostering sustainable growth in Thailand.
