Saudi Arabia has reiterated the critical importance of safeguarding the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any disturbances in this key waterway may have dire consequences for global trade and energy security.
During a joint press conference with member nations of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the United States, Dr. Abdulaziz Alwasil, the Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, underscored the strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz in sustaining international commerce and reliable energy supplies.
As reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Alwasil indicated that threats to navigation in the strait could adversely influence global markets, disrupt international supply chains, and hinder the seamless movement of goods worldwide.
He cautioned that issues in the region could lead to severe humanitarian and economic repercussions, such as delays in distributing vital supplies, medical products, and humanitarian assistance.
Alwasil stressed the necessity of protecting maritime safety and ensuring the free flow of global trade in accordance with international law. He advocated for enhanced international collaboration to mitigate tensions in the region and avert any escalation that might jeopardize both regional and global peace.
This statement coincided with talks regarding a draft resolution aimed at securing freedom of navigation and enhancing maritime security in international waters.
