The UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism has blocked 13,667 websites violating copyright rules in the first quarter of 2026. This shows a nearly 400% increase compared to last year.
Since the launch of the InstaBlock Lab in February 2025, a total of 47,667 illegal websites have been blocked. The system uses artificial intelligence to monitor digital platforms in real time and quickly process copyright infringement reports related to creative content and digital broadcasting.
Dr Abdulrahman Hassan Al Muaini, Assistant Undersecretary for the Intellectual Property Sector, said the initiative reflects the country’s strong approach to protecting intellectual property. He added that it helps build a safe digital environment that supports innovation and global competitiveness.
The ministry worked with the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority along with several partners, including Abu Dhabi Media Network, MBC Shahid, OSN, Yango Play, STARZPLAY, the Brand Owner Council, and Nissan Middle East.
Enforcement efforts were especially increased during Ramadan due to a rise in broadcasting violations. The number of blocked websites during the holy month grew from 62 in 2023 to 1,117 in 2024, 2,217 in 2025, and 5,677 in 2026.
Along with enforcement, the campaign also focused on raising public awareness about using only licensed and official sources for digital content. These efforts align with the “We the UAE 2031” vision to strengthen the knowledge-based economy and improve the country’s global standing in digital content protection.
