A 34-year-old individual has been handed an 11-month prison term after a failed robbery attempt against a woman in the parking lot of Columbia Asia Hospital Bukit Jalil. This incident, occurring in broad daylight, has raised alarms about public safety at busy healthcare facilities in Kuala Lumpur.
According to law enforcement, the attempted theft transpired around 11:30 am on May 18, when the suspect reportedly approached a 26-year-old woman while seated in her vehicle. Authorities noted that he forcefully opened her car door, aiming to seize her mobile phone before attempting to escape with her handbag.
A confrontation ensued as the victim resisted, calling for assistance. Ultimately, the suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle without any stolen items. Officials have confirmed that no property loss was incurred during the ordeal.
Cheras police chief Mohd Rosdi Daud indicated that the D9 Serious Crimes Investigation Division quickly initiated an operation post-incident. The suspect was later apprehended in Brickfields at approximately 5:36 pm on the same day.
Further inquiries revealed the man’s extensive criminal background, with 11 prior offenses logged. Several items linked to the crime were confiscated, including a motorcycle, helmet, and jacket.
Authorities confirmed that the man faced charges under Section 393 of the Penal Code for attempted robbery. After a guilty plea, he was sentenced to 11 months behind bars. Officials noted the rapid arrest as a testament to effective police work and community involvement.
This incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding personal safety in parking areas, particularly in densely populated urban settings. Authorities are advising the public to stay vigilant, avoid secluded parking spaces, and report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately.
