The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled the Indian squads for the much-anticipated one-off Test match and a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, commencing from June 6. Key highlights of the announcement include the much-anticipated return of cricketing heavyweights Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the ODIs, alongside the decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah.
Shubman Gill has been entrusted with the captaincy for both the Test and ODI series, reflecting the management's focus on grooming long-term leadership. KL Rahul will step in as vice-captain for the Test, while Shreyas Iyer is rejoining the ODI side to assist Gill.
Selectors have confirmed that both Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya are included in the ODI lineup, although their availability hinges on fitness evaluations and guidance from the BCCI. This strategic move showcases the management's commitment to fielding seasoned players ahead of a busy international schedule.
One significant decision was resting Jasprit Bumrah as a measure of workload management. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar mentioned that the fast bowler is being preserved for the critical England tour later in the summer, concentrating on his fitness and bowling regimen.
Several young players are set to make their debut following stellar performances in domestic and IPL tournaments. Harsh Dubey, Gurnoor Brar, and Manav Suthar will join the Test squad, while Prince Yadav has earned his first ODI call-up. Additionally, Ravindra Jadeja has been rested for the Test to provide younger all-rounders with opportunities.
The ODI squad boasts a formidable batting lineup comprising Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, and Nitish Reddy, with the bowling unit led by Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav. Promising players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant are expected to be key contributors in the Test.
India’s campaign against Afghanistan will kick off with the Test match in Mullanpur on June 6, followed by ODIs in Dharamsala, Lucknow, and Chennai. Enthusiastic cricket fans are eager to witness the come-back of established stars alongside the rise of new talents in the national squad.
