The eagerly awaited spy thriller Dhurandhar, featuring Ranveer Singh and directed by Aditya Dhar, has ignited a legal controversy ahead of its planned release on December 5, 2025. The film's narrative is being challenged by the family of the late Major Mohit Sharma, Ashoka Chakra (posthumous) and Sena Medal recipient, who argue it mirrors their son’s experiences without consent.
This issue gained traction following the release of the trailer, where viewers noted the protagonist's covert military operations closely resemble those of Major Sharma, a brave soldier from the Indian Army’s 1 Para (Special Forces), who lost his life in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir, on March 21, 2009. Major Sharma’s legacy of valor is celebrated across India.
Despite the director’s claims that the film is “purely fictional,” the Sharma family has lodged a petition with the Delhi High Court, stating that their son’s story is being exploited as a “commercial entity.” Additionally, they expressed concerns regarding privacy and national security, cautioning that depicting Special Forces operations might expose sensitive details.
In the legal notice, the Sharmas have named the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Jio Studios, director Aditya Dhar, among others, seeking to halt the film's release.
Legal representatives for the filmmakers contend that the storyline has no ties to Major Sharma, insisting it remains a fictional creation. The CBFC also verified that it has assessed the film as fictional in content.
Although the Delhi High Court did not impede its release, it instructed the CBFC to address the family's grievances seriously and potentially consult the Indian Army prior to final certification.
Dhurandhar boasts an ensemble cast including Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, and Sara Arjun, leaving audiences eager to see whether it will premiere as scheduled or encounter delays.
