On World Maritime Day 2025, the international shipping industry took the spotlight, highlighting its responsibility to protect the ocean. Shipping carries over 80% of global trade and uses more ocean space than any other sector, making its role in marine conservation crucial.
This year’s theme, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity,” focuses on reducing pollution, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and preventing biodiversity loss. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that the ocean is far more than a trade route—it feeds billions of people, regulates the climate, supports jobs, and sustains marine life. He urged nations to invest in resilient maritime industries and ensure the blue economy promotes sustainable development for all.
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez highlighted global actions to balance shipping growth with environmental protection. Key initiatives include tackling marine plastic pollution, protecting biodiversity through biofouling regulations, decarbonisation plans including net-zero frameworks, stricter air pollution controls like the Mediterranean Emission Control Area, safe ship recycling, and reducing underwater radiated noise.
Important agreements, such as the High Seas Treaty on marine biodiversity and ongoing global efforts against plastic pollution, were also emphasized. IMO Headquarters marked the day by illuminating in blue, encouraging global awareness. The event underlined that international cooperation, innovation, and commitment are essential to ensure oceans remain a source of life, opportunity, and hope for generations to come.
