On May 16, 2026, General Secretary and President To Lam delivered a significant address at the 120th anniversary celebration of Hanoi National University, which also received the esteemed First-Class Labor Order for its commitment to education, research, and national progress.
In front of prominent government officials, educators, scientists, students, and international dignitaries in Hanoi, To Lam hailed Hanoi National University as a beacon of Vietnamese intellect and scholarly achievement. He commended the institution for its pivotal role in producing generations of talented individuals who have profoundly impacted the nation's independence, growth, and modernization.
Reflecting on the university's rich history, which began with the founding of the University of Indochina in 1906, he noted that it evolved into a significant modern multidisciplinary institution in Southeast Asia, instrumental in shaping Vietnam’s higher education framework.
To Lam highlighted the crucial role of President Ho Chi Minh with the university post-1945, emphasizing that education and knowledge are vital for nation-building. He remarked that during challenging periods of resistance and recovery, Hanoi National University was fundamental in training the intellectuals and future leaders of the country.
During his remarks, To Lam laid out seven essential priorities aimed at enhancing Hanoi National University’s stature. He challenged the university to emerge as a premier academic hub in Asia and to strive for inclusion in the top 100 Asian universities by 2030 and the top 300 globally by 2035.
The President underlined the importance of innovation, digital transformation, and a focus on fields such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and renewable energy. He encouraged the university to position itself as a national leader in research and technology, directly contributing to Vietnam’s economic strategy and modernization efforts.
To Lam also emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration among academia, businesses, government entities, and international organizations, advocating for academic research to extend its benefits to society and local communities throughout Vietnam.
A prominent point in his speech was the theme of academic diplomacy and Vietnam's international reputation. He asserted that Hanoi National University should bolster its global partnerships and serve as a representative of Vietnamese culture and innovation on the international stage.
