In a significant development, a Chinese national is facing legal action in Singapore for allegedly stealing bank cards from another passenger on a flight from South Korea. This incident escalates existing concerns regarding thefts occurring during international flights.
The 59-year-old suspect was apprehended at Changi Airport Terminal 1 on May 18, part of a focused operation by the Airport Police Division aimed at combating theft during air travel.
According to the investigation, authorities found two bank cards on the suspect that reportedly belonged to a fellow traveler on the same flight. It is believed that the accused discreetly accessed the victim’s belongings while remaining unnoticed.
Investigators indicated that the suspect allegedly removed a bag from the overhead compartment and moved to another seat several rows away. He is said to have opened the bag, taken the victim’s wallet, and extracted two bank cards before returning the bag to its original spot.
After leaving the aircraft, the suspect blended back with other passengers, while the theft went unnoticed by the victim until later, prompting swift action from airport officials.
Singaporean authorities have reiterated their strict stance on in-flight theft, citing passenger safety and aviation security as paramount. Travelers are urged to keep their valuables safeguarded and to be vigilant when stowing bags in overhead compartments.
The individual is likely to face legal consequences for in-flight theft, which could result in imprisonment for up to three years, fines, or both, under Singaporean law. Ongoing investigations will determine the next steps in this case.
