Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway takes on a powerful new role as a global pop star in the upcoming film Mother Mary. The film explores the intense and emotional relationship between two former close friends.
Hathaway plays “Mother Mary,” a famous pop icon who is struggling ahead of her major comeback performance after a mysterious incident. Seeking help, she travels to England and visits fashion designer Sam Anselm, played by Michaela Coel. The two reconnect at Anselm’s countryside studio after being separated for ten years.
Their reunion brings back old emotions, including anger, pain, and memories of their once strong friendship. At the same time, it also reveals the deep bond they once shared.
Hathaway revealed that she trained extensively for the role, including up to eight hours of daily dance practice for months. She also spent a year developing her singing voice for the film. The actress said she drew inspiration from global superstar Beyoncé and approached the role with full dedication.
“I didn’t want to just show up and do a good job, I wanted to do my absolute best,” Hathaway said at the London premiere. She also shared that she understands her character’s struggle with fame and identity.
The film is written and directed by David Lowery and produced by A24. It also features original music by Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA Twigs. Hathaway performs seven songs on the official soundtrack titled Mother Mary: Greatest Hits.
Director David Lowery praised Hathaway’s commitment, saying she worked hard to ensure the music felt real and emotionally powerful.
Mother Mary will be released in cinemas across the United States and the United Kingdom on Friday.
