US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he plans to charge the same taxes on products from countries like India and China. He said that the United States will soon charge the same fees that these countries charge American goods, to make things fair for both sides.
Trump explained, "We will soon start charging the same taxes—they charge us, we charge them. Whatever a country like India or China charges, we want it to be fair for both of us." He added, "We haven’t done this before. We were planning to do it until Covid happened."
Before meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week, Trump also talked about India’s high tariffs. He said, "India has some of the highest tariffs. It is hard to do business there." Trump said that India’s tariffs make it tough for companies to do business. He mentioned that Tesla CEO Elon Musk likely met Modi because he wanted to do business in India, but the high tariffs are a problem.
Trump also talked about how India’s tariffs affected American companies in the past. He gave the example of Harley-Davidson, a well-known motorcycle company, which couldn’t sell its bikes in India because of high taxes. Harley-Davidson had to build a factory in India to avoid these high fees.
Trump said, "India is one of the countries with the highest tariffs. There are a few smaller countries with higher tariffs, but India is right at the top. I remember when Harley-Davidson couldn’t sell its motorcycles in India because of the high taxes. Harley had to build a factory there to avoid paying these high tariffs."
Trump’s statement shows that he wants to make sure that other countries treat American businesses fairly. He is trying to make trade between countries more equal, especially with India and China.
