Trump fires 2,000 USAID workers, puts thousands on leave after approval

The Donald Trump government said on Sunday that it will remove 2,000 workers from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and send most other staff on leave. Only a few workers handling important duties, top leaders, or special programs will continue working. This step was taken after a judge gave permission to remove thousands of USAID workers in the US and other countries.

Judge Carl Nichols decided against workers who wanted to stop this action. After the decision, USAID sent a message to all workers. It said that from 11:59 pm EST on Sunday, February 23, 2025, all USAID workers would be placed on leave, except for those doing very important work.

This step is part of the government's bigger plan to reduce USAID’s work. Earlier, USAID had closed its main office in Washington and stopped many US-funded help and development programs in different countries. President Trump and his top cost-cutting advisor, Elon Musk, believe that USAID’s work wastes money and supports ideas they do not agree with.

Along with this, hundreds of USAID contract workers also got letters ending their jobs over the weekend. These letters did not include worker names or their job roles. Some workers fear this could make it hard for them to get jobless benefits.

At the same time, another court case has stopped part of the government’s plan. Another judge said the freeze on USAID’s foreign help must be removed for now. The court found that the government was still holding back aid money even after facing legal challenges. The judge ordered that USAID’s help programs should continue for now.
