SC issues notice on Ashish Chanchlani’s plea over multiple FIRs in show row

The Supreme Court on Friday, February 21, sent a notice on a case filed by YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani. He is asking to merge many police cases filed against him for his role in the online show "India's Got Latent." He wants all cases from Guwahati and Mumbai to be handled in Mumbai.

A group of two judges, Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh, asked the governments of Maharashtra and Assam to respond. The court also linked Chanchlani’s case with another YouTuber, Ranveer Allahabadia, who is also facing trouble for the same show. The show upset many people because of some comments made in one episode.

Earlier this week, the Gauhati High Court gave temporary protection from arrest to Chanchlani. The court told him to meet the police within 10 days. The episode that caused problems had Chanchlani, Ranveer Allahabadia, Jaspreet Singh, and Apoorva Makhija. Some of their words were seen as rude and inappropriate. Many people on social media got angry. Later, Ranveer Allahabadia and the show's host, comedian Samay Raina, said sorry. Raina also removed all episodes of "India's Got Latent" from his YouTube channel.

On February 10, Assam police filed a case against five YouTubers, including Chanchlani. They were blamed for sharing bad content online. The police used laws against rude acts, disrespecting women, and breaking internet rules. A man named Alok Boruah complained that the show had bad talk that could badly affect viewers.

Apart from Assam, the Maharashtra Cyber Cell and Jaipur Police also started cases about the same issue. In his defense, Chanchlani said the bad words were spoken by Ranveer Allahabadia and that he had nothing to do with editing or making the episode.

The Supreme Court earlier gave Allahabadia protection from arrest too. He is facing cases in Mumbai, Guwahati, and Jaipur. The court is also looking at the bigger problem of how online content is not properly checked. This case has made people think about what rules should be there for YouTube and social media content.
