Protests Erupt in Manipur After Assam Rifles Detain 26 Volunteers

Protests started in different parts of Manipur on Friday after Assam Rifles arrested 26 village volunteers in Kakching district. The soldiers said the volunteers were involved in criminal activities. However, after a lot of people protested, all the volunteers were released.

The arrests happened after Manipur's Governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, warned people to give up any weapons within seven days or face strong action. This made many people upset, and they took to the streets to protest.

Some of the people who were arrested were students getting ready for their board exams. This made the protests bigger. The public demanded their release, and soon the authorities let all the detainees go free.

The protests became intense, with people burning tyres and wooden blocks in districts like Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Bishnupur. Shops in places like Wangkhei-Andro parking, Khurai in Imphal East, and Uripok and Canchipur in Imphal West were shut down in support of the protests.

In Moirang Bazar, protestors demanded that the arrested volunteers be set free. Meira Paibis, a group of Meitei women, led night protests across the valley. They called for an end to the arrests and for village volunteers to be left alone. The protests caused a lot of unrest in the region.
