Odisha orders KIIT to act against staff after Nepalese student’s death

The Odisha government has asked KIIT to take strict action against staff who treated Nepalese students badly. This order came after Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, spoke to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. She asked him to remove teachers and staff who behaved wrongly with Nepalese students.

A senior official said KIIT must make sure Nepalese students feel safe. Many students have not returned to campus because they are scared. The Nepalese government is also worried that students may face more problems if those responsible are still working at KIIT.

The trouble started on February 17 when a 20-year-old Nepalese student was found dead in her hostel room. Most students were at KIIT’s foundation day event when her body was found. After this, Nepalese students protested and asked to see her body. The situation became worse, and there were fights between students and KIIT staff.

Some reports said that many Nepalese students were forced out of their hostels and left at a railway station far from Bhubaneswar without tickets. Some students also said that security guards threatened and mistreated them.

After checking CCTV footage, the police arrested ten KIIT employees, including senior officials and security guards, for attacking students. KIIT later fired two security staff and suspended three senior officials, including a hostel manager and an officer from the International Relations Office. The institute also apologized for what happened.

KIIT has about 1,000 Nepalese students, but only a few have come back to campus after the incident. Many students are still afraid because of how they were treated. The Odisha government wants to make sure all students feel safe and protected at KIIT.
