Kashmiri MBBS student ragged in Karnataka, Omar writes to CM Siddaramaiah

A second-year MBBS student from Anantnag, Kashmir, studying at Al-Ameen Medical College in Bijapur, Karnataka, was badly treated by senior students. His name is Hamim. The seniors forced him to do things, hit him, and scared him. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) shared this news on social media and asked Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to take strict action.

The problem started on Tuesday at 4 PM when Hamim went to watch a cricket match between the 2019 and 2022 batches. A senior student told him to leave, and he did. But this was not the first time he was treated badly. Last year, a senior got angry with him in the dining hall because Hamim did not say hello during dinner. Hamim is the captain of the 2023 batch cricket team, and some senior students did not like that.

JKSA’s National Convenor Nasir Khuehami said that the seniors first spoke rudely to Hamim, then started bullying him. They made fun of him and forced him to do an "Al-Ameen salute," sing songs, and dance while they laughed. They also tried to push him into their car, as if they wanted to harm him more. When Hamim took out his phone to record, they got angrier. Later that evening, six to eight seniors went into his hostel room, beat him up, forced him to make an apology video, and warned him to stay quiet. They told him he had four more years in college, and since they were locals, they could make his life very difficult. They also did not allow him to play cricket anymore.

Khuehami said this attack was shocking and very wrong. He said the system failed to protect students and that strict punishment should be given to those who did this. He also said there should be stronger rules to stop ragging, especially to protect Kashmiri and non-local students who often face extra problems. JKSA requested Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to look into this matter and make sure such things do not happen in colleges.

However, some people in the college said the issue was made bigger than it actually was. A college official said that when students are asked to follow rules, they sometimes make a big issue out of it. Some also said that the affected students did not follow college rules, such as the dress code.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he spoke to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah about the case. Siddaramaiah promised that the police have filed a case, and strict action will be taken. The four students who did this have been found, and the police are investigating the matter.
